Flat-pack furniture is priced as if assembly is trivial and takes twenty minutes. Anyone who has laid out 140 cam locks on a living-room floor at 9pm knows otherwise. Here is what furniture assembly costs in San Diego, how long the common pieces really take, and how to avoid paying for a service you can get bundled.

The going rate

Furniture assembly in San Diego is priced three ways:

• Hourly pro rate. The standard model. Expect a per-hour rate with a minimum, and billing that begins when the assembler arrives.
• Per-item flat fees. Common with retailer-affiliated services. Simple and predictable for one bed frame; it gets expensive fast across a full bedroom set.
• Task-marketplace bids. Cheapest headline number, most variable outcome. You are hiring an individual, not an insured company, and cancellations are common on weekends.

Ours is hourly and deliberately simple: $100/hour, billed in 15-minute increments so a 40-minute job is a 40-minute charge, not a rounded-up hour. The first 15 minutes are free when assembly happens on the same visit as a delivery, and standalone assembly has a 1-hour minimum because a crew is driving out for that job alone.

How long common pieces actually take

Two people, tools on hand, instructions followed:

• Nightstand or small side table: 10 to 20 minutes
• Dining chairs: about 10 minutes each
• Bookcase or open shelving unit: 20 to 40 minutes
• Coffee table or TV console: 20 to 45 minutes
• Desk with drawers: 30 to 60 minutes
• Bed frame with slats: 30 to 60 minutes; add 20 to 40 minutes for an upholstered or storage bed
• Six-drawer dresser: 60 to 90 minutes
• Wardrobe or large armoire: 90 minutes to 2 hours-plus, and genuinely a two-person piece
• Sectional sofa: 20 to 45 minutes, mostly legs and clips
• Standard patio set of four to six pieces: 45 to 90 minutes
• Home gym rack or treadmill: 1 to 3 hours depending on model

The pattern worth noticing: drawers and doors are where the time goes. Anything with runners, hinges or alignment adjustments takes several times longer than a piece that is just panels and shelves.

What makes an assembly job cost more

• Missing or damaged hardware. This is the number one cause of an overrun. Open the box and count the hardware bags before your appointment.
• Wall anchoring. Tall dressers and bookcases must be anchored — a genuine safety requirement, not an upsell. Stucco, plaster and metal studs take longer than drywall over wood.
• Disassembly of the old piece. Breaking down what is being replaced is separate work from building the new one.
• Second-floor and walk-up carries. The box gets to the room before anything gets built.
• Vague or missing instructions. Marketplace and secondhand pieces often arrive with no manual and mismatched screws.

Assembly versus doing it yourself

Do it yourself when the piece is a shelf, a table, a nightstand or a set of chairs, and you have an afternoon. The instructions are honest about those.

Hire out when the piece has drawers or doors, weighs enough to need two people, has to be anchored to a wall, or has to be usable tonight. A dresser that takes a pro an hour takes an unpracticed person closer to three, and a misaligned drawer runner never quite comes right afterward.

The cheapest way to buy assembly

Bundle it. If we are already delivering the piece, the first 15 minutes of assembly are free and the crew, the tools and the drive are already paid for. That alone covers a nightstand, a set of chairs or the legs on a sectional. Anything beyond that continues at $100/hour in quarter-hour steps.

Standalone assembly is worth booking when you already have the boxes, but the 1-hour minimum means it makes the most sense when you have several pieces to knock out in one visit rather than a single nightstand.
